Background

Vegetable production in New York had a farm gate value of $398 million (118,000 acres) in 2014. Fresh market vegetables make up 86% of the production with a value of $344 million. Cucurbits (squash, pumpkins, and cucumbers) are grown on approximately 11,800 acres in NY with a farm gate value of $62 million, tomatoes are grown on 2,800 acres with a farm gate value of $24 million, and peppers on about 1,500 acres with a $12 million value.

Objective

Current IPM challenges for these pathogens is proper identification in the field by growers and crop consultants, followed by timely implementation of management tactics. If we could get more growers and crop consultants to report disease outbreaks of both P. capsici and bacterial diseases in pepper and tomato we would gain a better understanding of the distribution of these two major pathogen groups diseases within our state and implement better management tactics throughout the region. This program will (i) Identify and track areas with high disease pressure and track movement in region: (ii) Help growers implement better timed IPM tools to reduced input, improved pest management, limit movement of diseases to new areas, and increase quality and yield; and (iii) Provide up-to-date pest management guidelines and risk assessments during the growing season.

Situation

Phytophthora blight is an endemic problem on numerous fresh market vegetable farms in New York and throughout the United States. Susceptible vegetable crops include cucurbits, peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, snap beans, and lima beans. It infects all parts of the plant causing a wilt and dieback, and fruit infection can lead to a soft rot or “melt.” Bacterial diseases can also play havoc on vegetable crops through reduced plant vigor and fruit quality. The major bacterial diseases affecting fresh market vegetable production in NY are bacteria spot (pepper), bacterial speck (tomato), bacterial canker (tomato) and bacterial wilt (cucurbits).
